Pocketbikes (also called Minimotos or Mini GP Racers) are miniature 2-stroke 40 or 50cc Grand Prix
style racing bikes. These power-packed little monsters are race ready and capable of exceeding
60 mph with a 200 pound rider.
They average 50 pounds, and are approximately 16 inches high. That's small enough to pick up, and
haul in your car. Pocketbikes are made in two basic frame sizes, the mini (15 inches high) and
the midi (17 inches high).
Most Polini powered pocketbikes (regardless of horsepower) are geared from the factory to go about 40 mph.
That's fast at only 15 inches above the asphalt! Even so, you can easily modify them to go much faster.
Engine kits and other hot mods are available for bolting together open-class machines of over 12 hp, and
with a little porting and massaging, the production of well beyond 14 hp is possible.
People of all ages ride them. They’re small enough for young riders, but are designed as adult
racing machines. These bikes are designed to hold anyone up to 250 pounds.
Pocketbikes are not street legal. Most people ride them in parking lots and sometimes Go-Kart tracks
for racing events. Pocketbike racing has been a nationally recognized sport in Italy for years, but
is just now gaining wide recognition across the USA and Canada. Racing is being set up throughout the
country with various regional
associations and nationally through the United States Minimoto Grand Prix (USMGP).
